If there is no 401k plan where you work, consider opening an IRA your employer doesn't offer a retirement plan, consider an IRA, a similar plan, but you make all the contributions.

Consumers can also choose to open a Health Savings Account, which helps pay for medical care. Money can be saved tax-free and used for health care expenses that arise or for when a person retires. If you have a health insurance plans with a high deductible, you can still participate in the health savings plan.

The key is to know where every single penny you earn is spent, and find ways to eliminate wasteful spending.
